Description:
Pigeon is a symbol of peace.Pigeons are stout bodied birds with short necks and have short slender bills with a fleshy cere. The species commonly referred to just as "pigeon" is the Feral Rock Pigeon common in many cities.
Several species of pigeons are used as food and it is excellent meat. Domesticated or hunted pigeon have been used as the source of food since Ancient Middle East, Ancient Rome and Medieval Europe. It is familiar meat within Jewish, Arab and French cuisine.
The bacteria Chlamydophila psittaci is endemic among pigeons and causes Psittacosis in humans. It is transmitted both from handling pigeons but mostly from their droppings. Psittacosis is a serious disease but rarely fatal (less than 1%). Pigeons are also important vectors for different species of the bacteria Salmonella which causes diseases as Salmonellosis and Paratyphoid fever.
