Fruits So Sweat And Lovely Gardens Image Collection

Care Of Apple Tree:

1. Water young trees regularly, especially those on semi-dwarfing or dwarfing rootstocks, to ensure that the root system becomes well established.
2. Renew the mulch periodically, but pull it away from the tree in the fall so mice don't nest over the winter and eat the bark.
3. Begin training trees to their permanent framework in the first season.
4. Prune bearing trees annually.
5. The harvest season ranges from midsummer to late fall, depending on the variety.
6. To avoid pulling out the stem when you harvest, cup the apple in your hand, tilt it upward, and twist to separate it from the spur at the point of attachment.

Care Of Strawberry:

1. First year, spring: Keep the bed free of weeds. Pick off blossoms to prevent fruiting and encourage production of healthy daughter plants.
2. Late spring: 5 to 6 weeks after planting, train daughter plants to take root in a 9-by-9-inch spaced row system.
3. Late spring and summer: Side-dress with ammonium nitrate (1/2 pound per 100-foot row), 5-10-10 (2 1/2 pounds per 100-foot row), or manure tea (1/2 to 1 pint per plant). Side-dress again 1 month later.
Late fall: After a few freezes, mulch with 5 to 6 inches of straw or 4 to 5 inches of pine needles.
4. Second year, late spring: Remove the mulch gradually in spring, but protect blossoms from late frost with covers of mulch, if needed. Provide 1 inch of water per week while the fruit is developing, through harvest.
5. Cover the patch with tobacco cloth or strawberry netting to keep birds out.
6. Summer: After harvest, till the plants under, plant a cover crop, and prepare the bed for new plants next spring.

Care Of Grapes Tree:

1. Prune the top back to two or three buds at planting time and follow the first-year training steps.
2. Prune annually when the vines are dormant according to the training system you select.
3. Do not fertilize unless the soil is very poor or the plants show poor foliage color or signs of nutrient deficiencies.
4. Cultivate shallowly around the base of plants to control weeds.
5. Drape netting over vines to prevent birds from destroying your harvest.

Care Of Pear Tree:

1.  Pears do best with a small amount of fertilizer early in the year. Heavy doses of nitrogen will make the tree more vulnerable to fire blight.
2.  Use spreaders to encourage horizontal branching and earlier fruiting spurs.
